You do not have to be a gardening expert to keep your new plant healthy. Most houseplants simply need consistent care, a comfortable environment and a little attention.
Follow these simple tips to give your plant a strong start.
1. Avoid Overwatering
Check the soil before watering. If the top inch still feels moist, wait a few more days.
It is usually easier for a plant to recover from slightly dry soil than from roots that have remained wet for too long.
2. Provide the Right Amount of Light
Place your plant where it receives plenty of natural light without intense sunlight burning its leaves. Bright, indirect light is a safe starting point for many indoor plants.
If your plant leans toward the window, rotate the pot regularly so every side receives light.
3. Use a Pot With Drainage
Drainage holes allow extra water to escape. Without them, water can collect at the bottom of the pot and damage the roots.
Never allow your plant to sit in a saucer filled with water. Empty the saucer after watering.
4. Keep the Leaves Clean
Dust can block light from reaching the leaves. Gently wipe larger leaves with a soft, damp cloth every few weeks.
Cleaning the leaves also gives you an opportunity to check for insects, discoloration or other problems.
5. Protect It From Extreme Temperatures
Keep your plant away from heating vents, air-conditioning vents and cold drafts. Sudden temperature changes can stress the plant.
Most indoor plants are comfortable in the same temperatures people enjoy.
6. Do Not Fertilize Too Much
Fertilizer can support growth, but using too much may damage the roots. Follow the directions on the fertilizer package and only feed the plant during its active growing season.
When in doubt, use less fertilizer rather than more.
7. Remove Damaged Leaves
Yellow, brown or badly damaged leaves will not become green again. Remove them carefully with clean scissors so the plant can direct its energy toward healthy growth.
Do not remove too many leaves at once.
8. Be Patient
Plants need time to adjust to a new home. A small amount of leaf loss after moving the plant can be normal.
Avoid changing its location, watering routine and pot all at the same time. Give it time to settle in and watch for gradual improvements.
Growth Takes Consistent Care
A healthy plant does not grow overnight. It grows through steady care, the right resources and a supportive environment.
The same is true for a business. United Life Services can support your company through business registration, EIN assistance, insurance, payroll, accounting and marketing—all under one roof.
