How Often Should You Water Your Plant?

Watering may seem simple, but too much or too little water is one of the most common reasons indoor plants struggle. The good news is that your plant will usually tell you what it needs—you just have to know what to look for.

Check the Soil First

Instead of following a strict watering schedule, check the soil every few days. Place your finger about one inch into the soil.

  • If the soil feels dry, your plant may be ready for water.
  • If it still feels moist, wait a few more days.
  • If the soil feels wet or soggy, do not add more water.

Most indoor plants prefer for the top inch of soil to dry before being watered again.

Water Thoroughly

When it is time to water, slowly pour water around the soil until a small amount drains from the bottom of the pot. This helps the roots receive water evenly.

Make sure your pot has drainage holes. A decorative pot without drainage can trap water and cause the roots to rot. If your plant is inside a decorative container, remove it before watering and allow the extra water to drain completely.

Watch for Warning Signs

Your plant’s leaves can provide important clues.

Signs of too little water may include:

  • Dry or crispy leaf edges
  • Drooping leaves
  • Soil pulling away from the sides of the pot
  • Slow growth

Signs of too much water may include:

  • Yellow leaves
  • Soft or mushy stems
  • Constantly wet soil
  • An unpleasant smell coming from the soil
  • Small insects around the plant

Because overwatering and underwatering can cause similar symptoms, always check the soil before adding more water.

Adjust for the Season

Plants often need more water during spring and summer when they are actively growing. During fall and winter, growth may slow down, so the soil takes longer to dry.

Temperature, sunlight, humidity and the size of the pot can also affect how frequently your plant needs water.

A Simple Watering Routine

Check your plant once or twice each week, but only water it when the soil needs it. With a little attention and patience, you will learn your plant’s natural rhythm.

Just like a growing business, a healthy plant needs the right support at the right time. At United Life Services, we are here to help your plant—and your business—continue to grow.
